5 Reasons Your Gas Oven Isn’t Heating Up

An oven that doesn’t heat up won’t do you much good when it’s time to fix dinner or bake a batch of cookies. If you have a gas oven, there are a few potential reasons it isn’t heating up. Below is a list of potential reasons to help you troubleshoot.

Gas Supply Isn’t Connected

Have you repaired your oven or stovetop recently? Is it brand new? If so, your gas valve may still be shut off from the repair or installation process. If that’s the case, you can switch that valve back on yourself.

Tripped Circuit Breaker

Your circuit breaker is a safety feature that stops gas from flowing to your oven if a part of the circuit isn’t working. Circuit breakers can trip for a variety of reasons, including the following:

  • A current overload
  • Damaged or frayed wiring
  • A faulty breaker switch
  • A ground fault

You can try resetting your circuit breaker by turning off all the appliances powered by the line you tripped, then flipping your breaker box’s switch from Off to On. However, if turning your oven on trips the breaker again, there could be something deeper at play. Call an oven repair technician to take a closer look.

Faulty Temperature Sensor

The temperature sensor in your oven regulates the inside temperature and shuts off the gas once the oven has reached your desired temp. However, if something is wrong with that sensor, it may not heat up as much as you’d like—or at all.

Open your oven and check your sensor’s location. If it’s touching the oven wall, it may be giving faulty readings. In this case, simply move it so it’s not in contact with the wall. However, if its positioning isn’t the problem, call a repair expert.

Broken Igniter

If your gas oven doesn’t produce any heat but you still smell gas, you could have a faulty or broken igniter—which is a serious fire hazard if left unchecked. Turn off your oven, turn off the gas valve, and don’t light any matches or lighters in the kitchen until you no longer smell gas. Then, call an oven repair service as soon as possible!

Control Board Malfunctions

Your oven’s control board is the spot where all the knobs and buttons are. Inspect and test the knobs for any outward signs of damage. If any components look burned or otherwise compromised, call a repair expert to discuss the next steps.

Hopefully, this list of potential reasons why your gas oven isn’t heating up helps you troubleshoot the issue. And if you find an issue that requires professional servicing, call Capitan Appliance to get your oven back in working condition as soon as possible!
